THE DAY OF THE REPUBLIC

This Republic Day, I commit the sacrilege: Democracy – the fools have a right to vote. Then I gape at Kejri-reign and atone: Dictatorship – the fools have a right to rule.

Plato and his guru Socrates got it right. Perhaps because they lived in the best democracy of its time, Athens, which democratically murdered Socrates, just as our rulers are democratically murdering the womenfolk. Perhaps because it was such a sham of democracy, Athens was defeated by the worst monarchy of its time, Sparta. An Athens-like fate I fear awaits our MCP democrats.

Returning to Plato, he rightly said that in a democracy the rulers will be not those best equipped to rule, but those with loudest voices; and they will turn the complex arena of politics into a crazy circus. Hence Plato’s famous ‘Ship of Fools.’

Why such cynicism on this cherished day? Because of our vote-gatherer rulers: Mulayam Singh Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav, Sharad Yadav, Vinay Katiyar, Abu Azmi, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, . . . with their contempt for women, that is, for half of the vox populi.

“Long live the Republic! I’m one of them.”
